Århus & Food

Århus is Denmark’s second city and the dining scene doesn’t feel like it.

Frederikshøj and Substans both score a perfect 100 on Vota. French restaurants are the most-rated category in the city, which is unusual and worth paying attention to. The scene is smaller than Copenhagen but the gap at the top is smaller than you’d think.

Prices are generally lower than the capital. A good pizza costs 85–95 DKK, a casual meal 100–150 DKK. The Mexican and Middle Eastern scenes are better here than they have any right to be. Faour is a genuine standout.

Århus has a younger, more relaxed feel than Copenhagen. Fewer tourist traps, more neighbourhood spots that genuinely deliver. If you have one serious meal here, make it fine dining or French.

Before you eat

Stjerneskud. The classic Danish lunch dish — fried plaice on white bread with remoulade, shrimp, and lemon. You’ll see it everywhere. Try Kohalen if you want it done properly.

Port city. Århus is a working port and the seafood reflects it. The harbour area has several good spots worth the walk.

University city. The largest university in Denmark is here. Lots of young people, which keeps the food scene honest and prices a bit more reasonable than Copenhagen.

Reservations. Fine dining books up fast, especially on weekends. Everywhere else you can usually walk in or call a day ahead.

Budget. Cheaper than Copenhagen. A good lunch runs 100–180 DKK, dinner 200–400 DKK. Fine dining starts around 600 DKK per person and goes from there.

Fine Dining

The ceiling here is as high as anywhere in Denmark. Frederikshøj (Vota 100) and Substans (Vota 100) both score perfectly and are worth going out of your way for. Expect tasting menus, book well in advance.
